He was no more than a mere man in whom

He was no more than a mere man in whom
the word dwelt, in whom scandalous crimes
converted the catechumens to the faith,
and he himself obtained glorious eternity.

He was no more than a temple in whom
many gross errors concerning the mystery
of the trinity operated, being clearly
fearless of danger deposed in his place.

But he baptized the weak, governed the church,
strengthened the episcopal house, had recourse
to the emperor who gave an order to him.

He ought to encourage us under all trials
to begin to feel the tread of a god-man,
and find him sharing the burden with us.
